Selected Paintings based on Photographs

Photographs have always struck me as fertile ground for painting, sometimes because of the thrill of the arrested movement but also for studying faces of people long gone. Overall they satisfy my wish that I could have been an original witness.

This group excludes the few personal photos that I have had occasion to use. Most are from newspapers. Three of the paintings are based on a group of anonymous family photos I found by the road in the New Forest.

I have made an effort to thank photographers where possible including Murdo McLeod and the late Eamonn McCabe whose insights into the world about them always delight.
